Unix had two privilege levels for fifty years: root and not-root. Linux capabilities split root's powers into 40+ distinct permissions, so a process can bind a low port without being able to read everyone's files. The system is powerful, mostly invisible, and the foundation of every modern container runtime. Knowing it stops you from running things as root unnecessarily.
