Every write to a DynamoDB table (put, update, delete) is captured as a stream record. Records are stored for 24 hours, organized into shards. Consumers (typically Lambda) read from shards in order. It is DynamoDB's Change Data Capture (CDC) mechanism for reacting to data changes as they happen.
